In August I sat with my parents as my dad met with

In August I sat with my parents as my dad met with his ALS doctor for the very first time. While the doctor was evaluating the progression of disease in my dads body and explaining to us what we should expect going forward he asked my dad a couple of questions that seemed random and out of context. The questions being, “Do you own your home?” and “Do you feel safe in your home?”

I would imagine that to the person who answers no to either of those questions, the inquiry would be perplexing. But we understood it’s importance.

HOME: when it is built with love it is more than just four walls or a place to lay your head. It is a sanctuary. A place of refuge. A place to pray. A place to rest, and a place to prepare yourself for the struggles and disappointments that lay ahead.

For my dad, home is going to play a crucial role in how he fights a really big battle.

My husband and I have contemplated numerous times selling and moving somewhere else. It would make sense, especially considering all of the things that need fixed and updated here. Yet, every time we begin looking we always come back to how much we love it here. Even though it isn’t even close to being perfect. This is where we feel safe. When our world is meeting us every day with new conflicts, hurts, and disappointments this is where we feel peace. It has been, and continues to be, a place that brings joy and contentment.

I’ve always known home is important but the question at our recent appointment continues to confirm it over and over again. I’m thankful my dad has a home he feels safe in, I’m thankful I have a home I feel safe in, and I hope, for you, that you have a home like that, too.

This week we have been soaking up the cooler mornings as summer fades to fall and delighting in the thought of welcoming a season that is cozy and comforting.

I absolutely love the changing seasons. How about you?

You crown the year with your bounty;
your wagon tracks overflow with abundance.
The pastures of the wilderness overflow,
the hills gird themselves with joy,
the meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain, they shout and sing together for joy.

“And just as a little thread of gold, running through a fabric, brightens the whole garment, so women’s work at home, while only the doing of little things, is like the golden gleam of sunlight that runs through and brightens all the fabric of civilization.” - Laura Ingalls Wilder

Yesterday I sifted through years of homeschool books. As usual I made a pile to keep and a pile to consign. While quickly thumbing through them for things that needed to be removed, I found papers, food wrappers, pencils, and some other trash. I also found little notes, drawings, and an assortment of other things my children had worked hard on and that were important to them.

It kind of served as a walk down memory lane, an invitation to look back over the everyday moments of our lives. Those things reminded me of seasons we’ve embraced as a family and reminded me of what a privilege it is:
🤍to be a wife and mother.
🤍to be the number one fan and cheering squad to those God has placed in my care.
🤍to feed and shelter the minds, bodies, and souls of other humans who have been so fearfully and wonderfully made.
🤍to show Christ’s love to them by merely following His design.

If I achieve nothing else but to leave a little thread of gold through the tapestry of civilization simply by loving my family, I will consider that the best and biggest honor.

I hope that you, dear friend, know that your work as a wife and mother is of the greatest importance. You are making a huge impact on this world.

Afternoon coffee, sunshine, and flowers…. I’m trying to pull myself together and get the summer morning time bundle finished and available for those who use them, but these sneaky little things keep pulling me away. #fresh_wanderings_morningtime #nurtureandgather

What a friend we have in Jesus All our sins and gr

What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer.

This summer our family has been facing one of the largest trials of our lives. I haven’t shared much about it here though it has had an ever constant presence in our thoughts, minds, and prayers the past few months.

One thing that has been an encouragement to us through this time is that as long as we continue to abide in Christ, though the mountains may crumble, we will be safe.
Andrew Murray an old preacher from the early 1900’s reminds us that Christ is the vine and we are the branch. The safety and the fruitfulness of the branch depend upon the strength of the vine. As our vine, Christ will be to us all that a vine can be - holding us fast, nourishing us.

A large, strong vine bears the feeble branch and holds it more than the branch holds the vine. (Truly, is there anything more reassuring than this?)

We lack any strength of our own to hold on during this season, but His presence and strength has been a constant friend and help in our time of need. How truly thankful we are to have a friend in Jesus.
