There’s something magical about blueberry season. It’s more than the taste of sun-warmed berries or the satisfaction of filling a bucket to the brim — for me, it’s a season rich with memory, tradition, and family. Blueberries have always been more than just a fruit in my life; they’re part of my roots. I grew up spending summer days in the blueberry fields, side by side with my grandparents, cousins, parents, and sister. We’d spend hours under the sun picking berries, fingers stained deep purple, laughter echoing through the rows. Some days we were focused and efficient, filling pails for the market. Other days we lingered, talking, snacking on berries as we worked, taking in the rhythm of a shared task that tied us all together. There was something deeply satisfying about those days — the simplicity, the togetherness, and the quiet pride in our work. It’s that same feeling I try to capture in the kitchen today, especially with favorite recipes like this blueberry lemon layer cake that carry those memories forward in every bite.
Blueberries in Every Bite
Of course, a life filled with hours on the blueberry farm also meant a steady stream of blueberry desserts. From warm, gooey cobblers fresh out of the oven to muffins bursting with fruit, and sweet jam spooned over pancakes — blueberries flavored so many of our family memories. Over the years, I’ve tried countless ways to enjoy them, but I’m always looking for new ways to honor this beloved berry. That’s why I’m so excited to share a new favorite: a blueberry and lemon layer cake. It’s light, bright, and bursting with the flavor of summer. The tartness of fresh lemon balances beautifully with the sweet, juicy blueberries, and the layers come together with a silky lemon buttercream that ties it all together. Whether you grew up surrounded by blueberries like I did or you’re just discovering their charm, this cake is a celebration of the season — and one you’ll want to make again and again.

Simple Steps to a Stunning Blueberry Lemon Layer Cake
Don’t be fooled by its bakery-worthy look—this cake is delightfully straightforward. Using basic ingredients and a few easy techniques, you’ll end up with a soft, lemony cake bursting with juicy blueberries and finished with a bright, creamy frosting. Here’s how to make it:
Baking the Cake
-
Preheat and Prepare Pans
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, then line the bottoms with parchment paper for easy removal. -
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. -
Make Lemon Sugar
Add the sugar and lemon zest to a food processor and pulse for under a minute, until the mixture is pale yellow and the zest is finely blended in. This step brings out the lemon flavor beautifully. -
Cream Butter and Sugar
Using a stand mixer, cream the butter and lemon sugar together for about 3 minutes until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. -
Add Eggs and Flavor
Beat in the eggs, one at a time, scraping down the bowl between each addition. -
Combine Wet and Dry
Turn the mixer to low and slowly add in the flour mixture. Before it’s fully combined, pour in the buttermilk and lemon juice. Mix just until everything comes together—avoid over-mixing. You can finish blending by hand to be sure everything is gently incorporated. -
Fold in Blueberries
Gently fold in the blueberries (set aside a handful to use on the top of the icing). Then divide the batter evenly between your prepared pans. I like to use my food scale when dividing the batter. This helps me make sure it is divided as evenly as possible -
Bake
Bake in the center of the oven for about 35 minutes, or until the edges just begin to pull away from the pan, the tops spring back when lightly touched, and a toothpick comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs. -
Cool the Cakes
Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
Making the Lemon Frosting
-
Mix the Frosting
In a mixing bowl, beat the soft butter and powdered sugar together, adding lemon juice a little at a time until the frosting is smooth and spreadable. If it’s too thick, add more juice; if too thin, add a little extra sifted sugar. -
Frost and Finish
Once the cakes are completely cool, frost them and decorate however you like—fresh blueberries, lemon zest curls, or edible flowers make lovely finishing touches.
