There is something especially lovely about the rhythm of late summer. July and August invite us outdoors — to linger over berry-stained desserts, watch the evening sky soften into dusk, and gather together for simple learning before the fullness of a new season begins. This July & August Morning Time Guide was created with that slower rhythm in mind: gentle lessons, meaningful conversations, and small moments of beauty woven into ordinary days.
In our home, Morning Time has always served as a quiet anchor. Even during seasons when life feels uncertain or heavy, gathering around poetry, Scripture, art, and shared learning offers a steady reminder that growth often happens slowly and faithfully. While preparing this particular bundle, our family was walking through difficult health circumstances with someone we dearly loved. Looking back now, I can see how deeply that season shaped these pages. Rather than rushing to fill every space, this guide leans into simplicity, rest, and togetherness.
If you are in a season where you need your homeschool rhythms to feel lighter and more sustainable, I hope this collection encourages you. The July & August Morning Time Guide was designed to help families continue learning while also leaving room for summer evenings, homemade treats, nature walks, and the kind of memories that stay with us for years.
Inside this guide, you will find poetry by Robert Louis Stevenson, summer-inspired art study, Scripture passages centered on God’s character, nature study ideas for warm evenings outdoors, handcrafts inspired by rural beauty, and gentle character study topics to explore together. Whether you use Morning Time daily or simply a few times each week, may these resources help you cultivate a home filled with wonder, peace, and meaningful connection.
If you are new here, you may also enjoy exploring the Morning Time Library, the Gentle Weekly Rhythm Planner, and other seasonal recipes and homeschool resources designed to support slow, intentional home life.

A Simple Guide to Morning Time | July & August 2022
POETRY

Robert Louis Stevenson continues to be a beautiful companion for Morning Time. His poetry carries a childlike wonder that helps ordinary moments feel memorable and full of delight. Summer is the perfect season to slow down and savor his words together, whether read aloud over breakfast or tucked into the quiet rhythm of an afternoon lesson.
You can read a short biography of his life here: Brittanica Kids

ART
Summer berries feel woven into the fabric of the summer season — gathered from roadside stands, baked into pies, or eaten warm by the handful outdoors. In our home, blueberries have long carried special memories, but blackberries hold their own charm as well. Their deep color and untamed beauty make them a lovely inspiration for both art and baking during the late summer months.
In this guide, we will study the work of English artist Elizabeth Adela Forbes, whose paintings beautifully capture light, texture, and everyday life. Her work pairs naturally with the peaceful rhythms of summer learning.
I found little information about her personal life but many of her works. You can find them here: Wikimedia.
SCRIPTURE

This month’s Scripture study continues focusing on the character of God — truths that provide steadiness and hope through every season of life. These passages encourage thoughtful conversation and quiet reflection while helping children build a strong spiritual foundation over time.
Scripture references included this month are:
- Phillipians 3:9
- Psalm 119:137
- Jeremiah 12:1
- Revelation 15:3

NATURE STUDY
Late summer evenings invite us outdoors in a way few other seasons do. This month’s nature study encourages families to slow down after dinner, step outside together, and pay attention to the small sounds and patterns of the natural world. Spend time stargazing, sketching the night sky, or listening for the familiar songs of crickets, frogs, and owls in the distance.
CRAFT
This bundle includes instructions for creating miniature painted barn quilt stars — a simple craft inspired by the timeless beauty of rural landscapes. Barn quilts have long added warmth and character to country roads and farmland, and this project offers a meaningful way to bring a touch of that handmade charm into your home.
CHARACTER STUDY

Month by month, small lessons build a broader understanding of history and leadership. This month’s character study focuses on President Lyndon B. Johnson and the era surrounding his presidency. Families may also enjoy learning more about Lady Bird Johnson and her lasting contributions to conservation and public beautification.
RECIPE
This bundle includes instructions for mini-painted barn quilt star patterns. I have always been delighted to see barn quilts scattered throughout the country. They always add charm to the farmland they sit on. This craft will be a fun way to bring a bit of that country charm into your home.
